Instituto Akatu

Instituto Akatu was founded on 15 March 2001 in Brazil, the date on which World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated. The name “Akatu” comes from the indigenous language Old Tupi and means “good seed” and “a better world”, which is exactly what our organisation advocates: that consumers become “good seeds” and act together to build a more sustainable world. The name represents our conviction that a better world lies in the everyday choices we make and appropriate government actions and business practices to support and enable sustainable lifestyles. Project of the Akatu Institute, Edukatu is the first learning network on the concepts and practices of conscious consumption and sustainability for students and teachers of elementary education throughout Brazil. In this platform, there are exclusive pedagogical materials (videos, reports, lesson plans, activities, games, etc.) distributed in thematic circuits for teachers and students to explore. In addition, the platform enables schools to exchange ideas and share information with other schools. Throughout its three years of existence, Edukatu has already added more than 175 thousand impacted people and celebrates the more than 23 thousand students, 7 thousand teachers and 3 thousand registered schools in its base, all over Brazil.
