The Art of Science

Article

Through the friendship of Turner and Faraday, science became expressed in art.

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was one of the finest landscape and seascape artists in the history of art whilst Michael Faraday (1791-1867) was one of the most accomplished scientists of all times. A friendship between these two men resulted in Turner's Art giving expression to Faraday's science.

If you look closely into Turner's snowstorm Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth (1842), you can see the magnetic wave pattersn that you get by holding a magnet under a sheet of paper covered with iron filings.
